Starting work on the Cockpit

From Whangarei to Christchurch

We finally found a boat after almost a year of looking. Previously named “Tuscany” we have renamed her “Hiraeth” – a bit of Welsh in the Pacific ocean!
The previous owners - Ciel & Angie Tierra – sailed her from San Fransico around the Pacific and then New Zealand. So she has done a fair few ocean miles!

Our maiden voyage in Hiraeth started from Whangarei, our destination – Lyttelton.
We cruised around various islands, anchoring up overnight, generally enjoying the end of the summer weather. Gisborne was a welcome stop over after rounding East Cape. From here we did our first overnight sail into Napier.
We were holed up in Napier for almost 2 weeks due to bad weather – but this gave us a chance to meet up with other cruisers. Tom Jones was playing at the Mission concert on St Davids day and we managed to get tickets – disappointing that very little knicker-throwing went on!!

Finally we had a good weather window & set off for the top of the South Island. Strong winds off Cape Palliser gave us a bit of a pasting – and we hove-to for a few hours. A southerly change was on it’s way – so we headed in for Wellington (70 hours after leaving napier).
Our last leg from Wellington to Lyttelton was pretty uneventful – pretty exciting to see a whale off the Kaikoura peninsula.
We were back in Christchurch – and we had a bit of work to do on the boat!
